Use permanent hiring when the capability must stay inside the business. Use staff augmentation when the work is urgent, specialist, or likely to change in size. Use both when you need delivery now and ownership later.
That is the short answer. The useful answer comes from looking at the work rather than defending one hiring model for every situation.
An open role is not just an HR metric. It may be a delayed release, an overloaded engineering lead, a security review that never starts, or a customer commitment at risk.
Write down the date by which the person must be productive. Then estimate what slips if that date is missed. A permanent search can still be right, but the decision should include sourcing, interviews, notice periods, and onboarding—not only the day an offer is accepted.
Augmentation works well when the cost of waiting is high and the brief is clear enough for an experienced specialist to enter quickly. A cloud migration, test automation buildout, reliability push, or six-month delivery surge usually has that shape.
Some work carries business memory that should remain with employees: product direction, core architecture, customer relationships, security accountability, and the systems that differentiate the company.
Other work needs deep skill for a defined period. A data engineer may be needed to establish pipelines and coach the internal team. A group of QA engineers may help a release train recover from a testing backlog. A solution architect may guide a transition without becoming the permanent owner of every system.
External talent should not mean external ownership. Name the internal person who owns decisions, accepts work, and receives knowledge before the engagement begins.
A permanent hire includes sourcing time, interview hours, compensation, benefits, equipment, management capacity, and the risk of a long vacancy or early departure. An augmented specialist includes a visible rate plus onboarding, coordination, and knowledge transfer.
Model the period that matters. For a four-month deadline, a permanent annual salary comparison hides the cost of delay. For a capability you will need for three years, an indefinite contract can hide the value of building internal depth.
The lowest rate is not automatically the lowest cost. Rework, weak screening, and slow replacement can erase a rate-card saving quickly.
Permanent hiring suits stable demand and a role with a durable place in the organization. Augmentation suits peaks, projects, uncertain roadmaps, and scarce skills that are needed before the business can justify a full-time position.
Ask four questions:
Four strong yes answers point toward permanent hiring. A short horizon, urgent start, specialist gap, or volatile workload points toward augmentation.
A practical hybrid is to place a specialist now while running a permanent search. The specialist protects the deadline, documents decisions, and helps define what the long-term role actually needs. The permanent hire joins a functioning system instead of inheriting a stalled project.
Another option is contract-to-hire when both sides need evidence of fit from real work. It should have a clear evaluation period, conversion terms, success measures, and an honest role at the end. See our contract-to-hire guide for the structure.

Choose for this body of work, not for the company forever. Review the decision after the first milestone because demand and hiring conditions change.
Navastit supports both paths: talent on demand and contract models for immediate capacity, plus permanent hiring for roles that should stay. A precise staffing brief is the best place to start.
